Rachel Hughes volunteered at Ground Zero because she felt she needed to do something. Within 24 hours she had sores all over her body. Five years later, she still has sores, which sometimes bleed spontaneously. She has between 30-40 percent lung capacity, has been in and out of the hospital for pnemonia numerous times, runs a fever sometimes for months at a time. She gets winded walking up a flight of stairs, suffers from insomnia, hair loss, adrenal failure, thyroid problems, stomach problems, constant muscle pain, and "that's just for starters..." And that's since 911. She is in the Mount Sinai 911 medical monitoring program.
